Some students apply to a Post-bacc program during a gap year before applying to a professional program to help strengthen their application. Post Baccalaureate programs can focus in a variety of areas such as covering missing prerequisites or helping students raise a mediocre GPA. Some programs may be specific to those wishing to enter a medical field, whereas others may be more general for a variety of career options. Your research of particular program will help you determine if a program is the right fit for you.
Post-bacc programs typically run for one or two years, depending on the structure of the curriculum. They can be full or part time. They also required a minimum 3. There are two tracks to the Edwards program. One is for students who have not taken any or just a few upper-level Biology courses.
The second track offers Biotechnology courses for those wishing to gain lab and research experience. I took General Chemistry 1 and 2 over the summer. Then, Physics 1, Organic Chemistry 1, and Biology 1 during the fall. No degree or certificate was awarded for completion of the program. The program was integrated in various ways with the medical school.
The program administration office was located in the medical school and while the classes were obviously not with medical students, we were in the medical school multiple times each week. There were numerous events to connect us with former postbaccalaureate students who had matriculated, and because we were put in constant contact with medical students, we had a good idea of what to expect once we began our medical education.
There were numerous shadowing opportunities that were integrated into the program. I shadowed in the internal medicine clinic, the pediatric clinic, and the emergency department. Look for a program that makes you feel like they want their postbaccalaureates to succeed in medical school. In some self-contained programs where everything is done within the confines of the program, tutoring may be offered.
In other programs where students rely on services outside the program, students may have to use college or university tutoring services. Post-bacc students need to have a realistic self-appraisal of their strengths and weaknesses and seek postbac programs that will address their weaknesses and enhance their strengths. As such, those students who need tutoring should seek programs that make it a point to provide tutoring within the program.
Typically, a structured program, whether a career changer or enhancement, will work closely with each student as she or he embarks on the application process to a health profession program. This likely will include a letter of recommendation, advice about the timing of the application, writing the personal statement, and selection of schools. Unstructured programs may also offer these services.
Some post-bacc programs have formal agreements with medical schools that guarantee an interview or admission, provided that postbac students maintain certain standards GPA, MCAT, etc. These linkages may also allow students to apply or be accepted into medical school earlier in the process than the typical cycle. Students usually have to apply for the linkage program after admittance to a post-bacc program.
Please look into individual program websites for details. However, typically, programs require applicants to submit a formal application including essays , application fees, two letters of evaluation, official transcripts, and possibly standardized test scores. Some programs with more open admissions policies may only require an application, an application fee, and official college transcripts. Some special Master's programs may require that students submit MCAT scores as part of the application process.
Post-bacc programs may be competitive to get into. These programs want to accept students they believe have a strong chance of admittance to a health programs program.
This depends on how you perform in your post-bacc program. Simply completing the courses will not give you the edge in the competitive application process.
Students should attain high grades and a well-rounded profile for a better chance of gaining admission to medical school. This is up to you and your specific application profile. Where do you need to improve on your application? Do you need to raise your GPA and have demonstrated that you can now do well in science coursework?
