I think he's searching for a reason to continue pursuing his evacuation; to justify the risk. There's an explosion and the power goes out, taking Rick's monitoring equipment with it. Shane checks Rick's heartbeat is this the sign? He leaves the room and starts down the hall with gun drawn. We're not sure if he was leaving or planning to secure a path, though I think it was the latter.
On looking behind him at the other end of the hall, Walkers are coming. Times ticking and he's going to be trapped. He goes back to the room, looks in at his friend one last time.
Pulls the door shut, and barricades it with the gurney. Italics in the above are my inference. In a conversation between Lori and a drunk Shane later in the same episode, Shane: Recounts the craziness Says he listened for a heartbeat but didn't hear one. Says he had Lori and Carl to think about, and had to get them safe to Atlanta, and then "If you had thought for one second that he was still alive, would you have come?

And before you say, Kentucky? Just a reminder that the comic book has things starting out in Kentucky. The television show moved the hospital to Atlanta. At any point of entry within HMH, all patients are screened for the potential risk.
The patient presented with flu-like symptoms to our facility. At that time patient did not meet KDPH health screening and was treated for the presented symptoms. When symptoms did not subside, the patient returned. From there, the patient was transferred to a tertiary care facility. When informed of the confirmed case, HMH immediately contacted the Public Health Commissioner and Center for Disease Control representatives to discuss cautionary measures for patients and staff.
At this time, HMH has evaluated the staff members who had contact with the patient. The small lever that Leon swipes his thumb over is actually the slide lock. The police leave someone to pull stop sticks off the road so the cars following can pass safely. There is no conceivable reason for stop sticks to cause a car to flip over. They are designed to slowly deflate the tires to prevent loss of control. The point is to slow the fleeing car, not make it crash. Durring the car chase and shootout scene in the first episode, Rick tells one of the deputies to make sure he has his gun's safety off.
The gun he has is a Glock, which does not have a safety. When Rick wakes up and starts getting out of his hospital bed, his pulse oximeter is seen on his thumb. However pulse oximeters are not placed on the thumb, because most people's thumbs are too short to reach all the way up under the sensor.
Inside the tank, the lights and radio are on, which would drain the batteries in a few hours. Rick has been laying in a hospital bed for months when he finally wakes up. His muscles should be atrophied and useless, and he should be covered in bed sores as no one has been moving or cleaning him for at least a couple weeks. Additionally his vocal chords would also not function immediately.
Is this interesting? When Rick finally makes his way out of the hospital, and is standing in the courtyard surrounded by corpses, the building he is supposed to have just left has clearly been abandoned for some years and is partially decaying. The building is revealed to have been partially blown up by the military in a Flashback scene in "TS" which accounts for its dilapidated and damaged appearance.
Rick was in the hospital for about 2 months and the IV fluid bags have enough water for a couple of hours, this is leading to wonder how is he alive and is the zombie outbreak just a dream. Rick was supposedly in a coma for well over a month, this is impossible as he would have died within days without water or IV fluids. It was stated the that the utilities have been off for a month meaning he had no way to get either. With the slow spread of the "virus" it would have been easily controlled at the start.
Since it takes hours for a person to change. The first night Rick spends in the house with Morgan and Duane he is told several times by Morgan that they need to keep quiet because if they make even a little bit of noise it could attract the infected and they would surround the house, he also says it was stupid of him to fire his pistol because it attracted a bunch of infected. Yet the very next day Morgan starts firing a rifle from the second floor window which causes the house to become surrounded by walkers.
Right before Rick finds the horse he finds a pickup, but the keys weren't in it.
